English / Literacy
The teaching of Literacy encompasses everything we do here at Elm Academy. It is our aim to make the learning of key skills as exciting and relevant to real life as possible. From the moment children enter our school in Nursery, children are surrounded by books and are encouraged to develop a passion for reading.
Children are taught Phonics from this young age to open the door to life long reading. Direct Phonics teaching continues until the end of Year 2 – longer if children have a specific need, as although this is only one method of learning to read, it is a vital skill the children must have the opportunity to master. The other methods of reading are taught through the reading of various texts in class – we try to link them to the topics we are studying and cover Fiction, Non-Fiction and Poetry.
Children are heard to read regularly, both individually and in Guided Reading and we are supported by volunteers from the community to support this crucial element of Literacy. We link writing tasks closely to the texts we read and the topics that we learn, in order for the children to be excited and enthusiastic about their writing opportunities. High standards of Literacy are encouraged through every lesson to maintain excellent quality throughout the school.
By the time children leave Elm, it is our aim that they are not only proficient readers and writers, but they have developed a passion for Literacy that will be the basis for all future learning.
